People will tell you that you can’t have too much water but that’s simply not true.
I first bought a 5L plastic bottle for carrying around and using as the main source of water. Then I installed a 20L tank in the car, as back up. Then I worried it was too small so I bought a 50L tank. It was too big for the car, and I worried about it leaking so I put it on the roof and kept the 20L container in the car. But that is a lot of weight on the roof, and you can’t handle a large 50kg package easily. Then it leaked. So I taped up the connectors but there were too many (as it had large 2 inch holes and it had to have multiple adapters to bring it down to tap size) and it still leaked a little. Given that we are only camping for one or two days at a time, I think 25L is plenty so I decided to leave it behind in Medlow. That also gave us more room for storage of boxes in the roof.
I have heard of people carrying hundreds of litres of water but there is such a thing as too much. There is a risk of leaking in the car, but the sheer weight makes it unwieldy and harder for the car to pull around. Putting it on the roof is even riskier because it raises your sender of gravity.
